Weapon Rack 500 lb Requirement
Small Arms Storage Racks have a weight capacity requirement of 500 lbs to meet physical security guidelines of AR 190-11, DOD 5100.76-M, OPNAVINST 5530.13 C and MCO 5530.14A.
Combat Weapon Racks are all pre-punched to bolt side to side. After leveling the cabinet with factory supplied leveling feet, “Reinforced” Anchor plates are welded into each corner for anchoring to the floor while backs have reinforced anchor holes for wall anchoring. This allows armorers to meet the 500 lb requirement without running chains through the cabinets in arms rooms.
From AR 190-11:
“All arms racks or containers will be locked with approved secondary padlocks. In facilities that are not manned 24 hours a day, rifle racks and containers weighing less than 500 pounds will be fastened to the structure (or fastened together in groups totaling more than 500 pounds) with bolts or with chains equipped with secondary padlocks.”
From DOD 5100.76-M:
“At the unit level, racks and containers weighing less than 500 pounds (with weapons) shall be fastened to the structure, or fastened together in groups that have a total weight exceeding 500 pounds, with bolts and chains.”
From OPNAVINST 5530.13C:
“Secure arms racks with low security padlocks (see appendix D). In facilities not continuously manned, arms racks and containers weighing under 500 pounds (with weapons) will be fastened to the structure (or fastened together in groups totaling over 500 pounds) with chains secured with bolts or low security padlocks (spot weld, peen or otherwise secure the bolts).”
From MCO 5530.14A:

Weapon Racks when attached to a building should be installed level, with leveling feet and then anchored to the floor from inside of the cabinet. Weapon Racks should also be bolted side to side and if possible bolted to the wall or back to back.
Installing weapon racks in this manner gives the most plumb installation with cabinets installed squarely and will make sure the doors work correctly.
Old Vietnam era M12 Small Arms Racks are commonly still found in arms rooms with the racks chained through eyelets. Chaining weapon racks to the floor or wall is no longer necessary with weapon racks able to anchor directly to the facility to meet the Weapon rack 500 lb requirement.
Newer, fully modular Combat Weapon Racks allow weapons to be fully enclosed inside of a cabinet with perforated steel reverse bi-folding doors. Perforated weapon rack doors allow for sight counts without opening the doors and also fully secures all attachments to weapons.
M12 Small Arms Racks
- M12 Small Arms Racks must be chained to facility to meet weapon rack 500 lb requirement
- Large welded eyelets inside the arms room are required to secure racks via chain to the facility
- Racks are not fully enclosed, exposting optics
- Hinged lock bars on M12 small arms racks hit optics when locking and unlocking
Combat Weapon Racks
- Combat Weapon Racks allow for racks to be anchored to the concrete slab from inside of the cabinet
- Fully enclose & protect optics and other associated gear with reverse bi-fold perforated security doors
- Threaded leveling feet in all 4 corners of cabinet base in addition to anchor holes for proper installations
- Eyelets are not longer required inside of arms rooms when installing Combat Weapon Racks to meet the weapon rack 500 lb requirement
